Inappropriate behavior: IGP orders redeployment of DPO’s in Delta State.
Following their alleged inappropriate behavior to members of the public and other professional misconduct, Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has directed the redeployment of all Divisional Police officers (DPO’s) in Delta State Command.
It was learnt that the Inspector General of Police was alerted to the misconducts of the officers by members of the public through the recently established NPF Complaints Response Unit (CRU) which is a multi-platform reporting mechanism through which citizens’ complaints, concerns and queries are addressed in quick time.
Briefing newsmen on the occasion of the 100 days of the establishment of the CRU in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, noted that ‘beyond the feedback of police inappropriate behavior, is the reassurance of police commitment to prompt, efficient and public oriented service delivery to the different segments of our society’.
She said CRU should not be construed as a demonization of police activities but a wakeup call to key into international best practices and reflects strongly, the change agenda and policing strategy of the IGP.
On the successes recorded by the Complaints unit within the period, the FPRO said, “CRU operations has led to disciplinary action against officers up to the rank on one Assistant Commissioner of Police’ while ‘Several officers have been redeployed from duty posts including DPOs by the police command”.
Emphasizing that the Assistant Commissioner of Police was also being investigated, she said if the officer is found wanting, he may face prosecution adding that 16 others were facing disciplinary action for misconduct, while a traffic Warden was dismissed.
The FPRO further said that majority of complaints received by the CRU through its multi-platforms were gotten from Lagos State 424 representing 33 per cent while Imo, Jigawa and Kebbi had two each.
“The phone is the most used medium with 1, 587 calls, whatsapp-215 calls, sms – 70 messages, emails – 83, twitter – 70, facebook – 33 while Blackberry and hardcopy petitions were 5 complaints each’.
Giving a breakdown of the status of the complaints, the Officer in charge of CRU, CSP Abayomi Shogunle said, a total of 1, 946 cases were reported on Police misconduct, 1, 522 cases were resolved and closed, 133 cases were found to be false and investigation is ongoing with regards to 291 complaints.
Shogunle said that there was a considerable reduction in reporting police officers’ misconduct by members of the public noting that ‘The force is worried about this development of complaints from the public’.
He noted however that the force would conduct a scientific research to ascertain the reason for the reduction and that the unit would ensure that Nigerians get the police they would truly call their own.
