President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday night disclosed that over 10,000 people have been killed while over two million Nigerians have been internally displaced by terrorists in the country in the last six years.
He said majority of the internally displaced persons were women and children.
According to a statement Saturday by the Special Adviser to the resident on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari who spoke at a dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth 11 for heads of states and governments participating in the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Malta.
Adesina quoted the President as calling for the establishment of a Commonwealth Committee to oversee the rendering of assistance and support to Nigerian and other member countries which had been adversely affected by the scourge of terrorism.
The President expressed the hope that the committee would have been established before the next meeting of the organization.
Buhari said he also expects the committee visit member states where terrorism have taken foot-hold with a view to evolving practical strategies for more meaningful assistance to the affected countries.
He further called on the Commonwealth to show greater resolve in helping Nigeria and other developing nations in its ranks to overcome the challenges of economic development, security, terrorism and corruption.
