Meanwhile, in the aftermath of last weekend’s terrorist’s attacks in Paris, France that left 129 people dead, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama has urged Cameroon to remain resolute with Nigeria in the determined effort to defeat Boko haram.
“The terror attacks over the weekend in Paris, draws, once again, into sharp focus the global dimension and reach of terror. We must remain resolute and very determined to stand with the rest of the world to defeat these evil purveyors of hate and extremism” he said.
The minister who was speaking at the opening of the 4th session of the Nigeria-Cameroon Trans-Border Security Committee in Abuja, also said, “In the same vein, we call on the international community to sustain their support in our fight against Boko haram, and to see this effort as part of the global campaign to defeat terrorism”.
Expressing the hope that both countries will in the next two days seek ways to strengthen bilateral relation through the instrumentalities of the trans-border committee to complement the partnership already forged at the multilateral level to defeat Boko haram, Onyeama said, “Our deliberation must also focus on how to improve through provision of enabling economic environment and building of infrastructure that will engage the creative potentials of our people living in border communities”.
“We must also seek to reduce the vulnerabilities presently inherent in our porous borders that have been exploited by the Boko haram to perpetrate their crimes of hate and insecurity in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, which borders Cameroon and also by economic saboteurs in the maritime and littoral South eastern states of our countries” the minister said.
In his remarks, National Security Adviser, Maj-General Babagana Mongonu said the 4th session is coming at a very crucial period, particularly as “We have witnessed the collective resolve of both our Presidents for peace and stability in our two countries in particular and the sub-region in general.
Recalling that President Muhammadu Buhari during his working visit working visit to Cameroon from 27-29 July, 2015, wherein he solicited the support and collaboration of President Paul Biya in the fight against terrorism and trans-border crimes, the NSA said, “To put an end to the scouge of terrorists activities, the Nigerian government recently issued a marching order to the Nigerian military to defeat Boko Haram terrorists by the end of year 2015”.
Continuing Mongonu said, “we are very much aware that this committee is not only concerned with tackling the nefarious activities of Boko Haram vect but it is also mandated to resolve a number of issues which affect the overall security along our common borders”.
“All these issues, I have no doubt will be duly captured and adopted in the agenda and will be properly deliberated upon by the appropriate sub-committees of high level experts on both sides. Therefore, I urge the sub-committees, Security, Investigation, Survey studies, and research, Conduct of Border Control Operation and Diplomacy and Justice to carefully deliberate on all issues and proffer constructive recommendations for the mutual benefits of both countries” the NSA said.
