After several delays the Senate on Thursday rejected the request of President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC).
Briefing newsmen at the National Assembly after about 2 hours closed door session, Senate spokesman Aliyu Abdullahi said the upper chamber did not confirm the appointment due to security report.
His words, “The Senate wish to inform the public that based on available security report, the Senate cannot proceed with confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
“The nomination of Ibrahim Magu is hereby rejected and has been returned to the President for further action.”
Also, reporting what happened during the executive session, Senate President Bukola Saraki said the Senate decided to turn down Magu’s appointment due to security report.
He added that members nominated by the President have been referred to ICPC.
As at the time of this report, the Acting Chairman and several of his staff who were around at the National Assembly have left the chambers.
The Senate Deputy Majority Leader Senator Bala Ibn Na’allah last week told journalists at the National Assembly that the confirmation of the acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu was deferred to today due to demand from several Senators for them to be present during the confirmation.
The confirmation hearing on Magu seemed destined for trouble as the Senate delayed it several times and also shifted it for hitherto inexplicable reason.
