Soldiers Accommodation: DHQ set to Construct new Blocks of Flats.

The Defence headquarters will early next year, embark on the construction of housing accommodation to cater for hundreds of officers and soldiers of the military who been facing accommodation challenges in Abuja, a situation DHQ said is not healthy for morale.

Chief of Logistics, Defence Headquarters, Major General Austin Okoh who spoke on behalf of the Chief of defence staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin at the commissioning of upgraded offices, sports facilities and Quarter Guard of the Defence headquarters Garrison, noted that already, DHQ has produced a plan for the houses which will be built inside the Mogadishu cantonment.

“The issue of shorage of accommodation has always been there. Presently, due to the battle against insurgency and other security challenges, the military is bringing more men and officers into the services. These personnel need to be accommodated and it is a big challenge. But we are working towards it. The only thing right now is that we are following due process. Early next year, work will commence”, he said.

On the number of houses expected, Okoh said, “All I can assure you is that we are going to build blocks of 4 flats to contain several families. At the end of the construction, Hundreds of officers and soldiers will be accommodated.

Earlier, Commander, DHQ Garrison, Brigadier General Hakeem Otiki noted that the facelift given to the offices and sports facilities at DHQ Garrison was necessitated by the poor and dilapidated condition of facilities, furniture and offices which were unbefitting of the status of a Garrison office.

He said that during one of his informal visits to the Garrison office, the CDS who was not impressed with the state of the facilities, approved some funds to renovate and upgrade facilities at the Garrison hence such facilities like the basket and volleyball as well as the tennis courts were upgraded along with offices for personnel.
