COAS urges Religious Leaders to Continue to pray for Unity of Country; Says Religion should unite rather than divide us.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai has called on religious organizations in the country, particularly the leadership of the Christians and the Muslim faith, to continue to pray and work towards the unity and peace of the country.

Speaking when the National Inter-Faith Religious Organization for Peace in Nigeria paid him a courtesy call at Army headquarters, the COAS said “God did not make a mistake in bringing Nigerians with various ethnicity and religion together. So it will be wrong to use the same platform of religion, either Christianity or Islamic religion to divide us. Rather, it should unite us”.

Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Nigerian Army, Lt. General Lamidi Adeosun, the COAS told the delegation of Muslim and Christian leaders, “What you do by praying for Nigeria is also as critical as what the Nigerian Army and other security agencies do to keep Nigeria one united entity and peaceful”.

“I am aware that you just completed a 40 days fasting and prayer session for peace in Nigeria. The COAS appreciates your using the religious line to intercede for Nigerians. On our part, we will not relent in tackling and ensuring security of the nation”.

Continuing Lt. Gen Adeosun said, “The COAS directed me to tell you that please continue to plead with and educate Nigerians to know that we don’t have any other country than Nigeria. When there is problem in one part of Nigeria, we should not say it is not our concern. If there is problem with one part of Nigeria, it is problem for other parts of Nigeria”.

“This is the only country where every Nigerian is a first class citizen. Any other country you go to, you are a second class citizen. So while the army and other security agencies are handling the security aspect of challenges, other sectors like the religious bodies should carry the message of peace, oneness and unity to the masses”.

Earlier, National Coordinator, National Inter-Faith Religious Organization for Peace, Bishop Sunday Garba Yaji stated that the organization was at Army headquarters to commend Lt. General Buratai (COAS) for his great leadership ability in leading the army and the great effort towards ensuring peace and security in the nation.

“We thank God for the great work the Nigerian Army and all its officers are doing. We believe in the Nigerian Army. We thank God that he (God) is giving us victory over the insurgents and Nigeria will soon return to what it used to be, peaceful and united”.

“We thank God that despite all the challenges of banditry, kidnapping, etc, the Nigerian Army has remained steadfast in keeping the country united.”
