FG, South West Governors agree to formalize Amotekun

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday met with the governors of the six western states of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos, with the resolve to draw up legal framework for the establishment of the South West Security Network-Amotekun.

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, told State House Correspondents at the end of the meeting that the legal framework will help resolve all burning issues surrounding the security network.

The Federal Government had while declaring the outfit illegal, maintained that “the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) has established the Army, Navy and Airforce, including the Police and other numerous paramilitary organisations for the purpose of the defence of Nigeria”.

Vehicles and motorbikes have even been donated to the outfit.

Asked if the governors failed to draw up the legal framework for the outfit, Akeredolu said the Inspector General of Police and other relevant security agencies were consulted before the launch of the regional security outfit.

The security outfit, operation Amotekun was launched to combat banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges in the zone.
