INEC Declares PDP’s Ademola Adeleke Winner of Osun Election

The returning officer for the 2022 Osun State governorship election, Prof, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the poll.

Adeleke polled over 403, 000 votes and won in 17 local government areas while Governor Adegboyega Oyetola won in 13 local government areas.

Adeleke had lost to the same opponent in the 2018 election after a disputed supplementary poll.

Adeleke had almost danced his way to the State Government House four years ago but his slim victory over Oyetola in the election was upended by the APC, which deployed all tricks in the book.

Both Adeleke and Oyetola had run neck and neck, scoring about 255,000 apiece. A rerun poll in a few wards across the state had ensured victory for Oyetola with about 423 votes.

But this time around, Adeleke won in the first ballot with a staggering margin compared to his margin of win in 2018 in the first ballot.

To consummate his victory, Adeleke won in 17 of the 30 Local Government Areas (LGAs) while Governor Oyetola won in 13.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of the governorship election conducted on Saturday on local-givernment-by-local government basis, prelude to announcement of the final announcement of the overall result.

INEC’s Returning Officer for Osun State governorship election, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe formally declared the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Adeleke as the winner and governor-elect of Osun State.

“I declare that Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected,” Professor Ogundipe announced.

In total Oyetola of the APC polled 375,027 votes while Adeleke of the PDP claimed 403,371 votes.
