Obi Congratulates Chimamanda on Recent Award

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the PDP, Mr. Peter Obi has congratulated the internationally-renowned author, Chimamanda Adichie on her recent United Nations Foundations Global Award for her work on literature.

Obi, who spoke to Correspondents at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, was among world leaders that converged in New York to celebrate the award.

He said: “As you can see, I am just returning from New York where I witnessed the award to Chimamanda who has continued to conquer the literary world; thus bringing honour and glory to Nigeria.

“Each time I read her books or about her numerous value-added activities, I remember the wise one that preferred to discover a single demonstration in Geometry than win the throne of Persia”.

Obi said it was heart-warming to learn that Chimamanda was the first Nigerian to win the award; adding that, “We address her as an ‘Award-Winning Author’ as she has won many quality honours through her writings and advocacy.

In most cases, she was the first African to win certain categories of those awards”.

Recalling his invitation to Chimamanda to Anambra State during his tenure as the Governor, Obi said it was part of his efforts to encourage the youths to adopt people like her as role models rather than men devoid of honour and integrity, whose only credentials was being lucky to make money.

Concluding, Obi called on Governments and agencies responsible for school curricula to include the works and master-pieces of Nigerian authors such as Chimamanda who is internationally-acclaimed for their literary prowess and finesse.
