18 Gang Members of Gana; Benue Militant leader Arrested – IGP.

Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris said on Wednesday that 18 members of the notorious and wanted militant, Terwase Agwaza aka Gana who have been terrorizing the people of Benue state and environs have been arrested.

Disclosing the feat during the meeting with DIGs, AIGs and Command CPs in Abuja, the IGP said the discovery of the ammunition bunker containing over 3, 000 live ammo, has exposed the trickery being employed by criminal elements who deceive state governors that they are surrendering weapons because of amnesty.

IGP Idris said, “With the weapons recovered from Gana, he can launch attack on a country. As you can see, he deceived the governor and the governor is regretting granting him amnesty.

“He (Gana) like others, what they do is to bring rickety weapons to deceive the public while they keep deadly weaponry underground”.

The IGP commended the synergy between the Police, the military, DSS and Civil Defence among others that led to the successful operation in Benue saying such synergy should be improved upon always.

“Whether it is Police, Army, Navy, DSS, Para-military, all security agencies have same objectives to checkmate crime hence there should be no need for inter-service rivalry” he said.

Regarding police performance in elections, Idris said, “In Rivers State in particular, our boys did a wonderful job. We tried for the first time to overcome the challenges of elections in Nigeria”.

“Our officers who derailed are being dismissed and facing prosecution. The INEC officials who also derailed were fished out and have been taken to court. This has never happened. It is a clear message that the police will no longer tolerate these acts”.

Disclosing that the Nigerian Police was working to expand its crime fighting structures to meet the demands of security challenges, the IGP said new Area Commands will soon be established in the states of the country to bring policing closer to the people.

He also said new Squadron Commands are to be established for Mobile Police personnel pointing out that already some governor had donated buildings and facilities to the police which are being inspected to determine the suitability for the task.
