Adeleke, first civilian governor of Osun State dies at 62; We Lost a Colossus-Dogara

The first civilian governor of Osun and serving senator, Isiaka Adeleke, is dead.

He died in the early hours of Sunday at a private hospital in Osogbo after succumbing to a protracted ailment.

Adeleke was aged 62.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the residence of the former governor in Ede reports that the atmosphere was tense as his corpse was brought in at about 1:10 pm, preparatory to the Islamic burial rites at 4:p.m.

A huge crowd of sympathizers and family members were seen weeping uncontrollably on sighting the corpse of the late flamboyant politician and socialite.

A two-term senator, Adeleke had won the Osun West senatorial seat on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007.

He, however, defected from the PDP in the build up to the 2015 general elections and had won again on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile the remains of Adeleke, reportedly has been taken to a hospital for autopsy.

“A sudden rush of sympathizers towards the entrance of the sitting room as the corpse was brought back into the Sienna car was recorded.

Scores of motorcyclists trailed the car as it was driven outside the house towards Osogbo where the hospital is located.

Some of the people claimed that he was being taken to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital while some said the autopsy would be carried out at the private hospital where he died early Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has described the sudden death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke as shocking and a huge loss to the country.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Turaki Hassan, the Speaker said he received with shock, the news of sudden death of Senator Adeleke and said the former Osun State Governor was a distinguished gentleman.

“Senator Adeleke was a leader who left giant footprints and lasting legacies as the first civilian governor of Osun State,” he stated.

Dogara also recalled that the late senator was credited for establishing tertiary educational institutions across Osun State when he was governor in the third republic, thereby laying the foundation for the development of the State.

“On behalf of all members of the House of Representatives, I condole with the Adeleke family, the Senate, government and people of Osun State over this big loss,” Dogara added.
