Chief of Naval staff CNS), Vice Admiral Ibok-Etteh Ibas, on Tuesday disclosed that Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN) will be the pioneer institution to offer degree programmes in emerging fields, which will give the country an edge in tackling emerging security challenges.
Represented by Rear Admiral Henry Babalola; the Chief of Policy and Plans at naval headquarters, the CNS stated that ADUN was conceived to expand the frontiers of knowledge for the growth and development of humanity and meet the training needs of the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies as well as seek to spearhead the application of knowledge to solve real challenges of our time”.
Ibas explained that the pioneer class will offer degree programmes in emerging fields such as forensic science, cyber security and software engineering, while the inaugural class will offer decree programmes in three faculties; Arts and Social Sciences, Management Sciences and Science.
The CNS further stated that faculties such as medicine, Engineering, law and pharmacy are to commence next session in 2019.
He noted that the era of tackling security challenges with physical presence was over therefore, the need for adequate intelligence using scientific approach to security issues.
He said the University will use non-traditional teaching and learning environment to prepare graduates equipped with skills demanded in the industry and who will compete globally.
“Students will be consciously exposed to industry and global best practices through teaching and mentoring by industry professionals, exchange programmes and internships at top corporations here in Nigeria and overseas.
“Students of ADUN will be graduating not only with the needed academic credentials but most importantly will be job ready graduates equipped with the skills for fruitful careers and to be job creators themselves”, he said.
President of Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN) Dr. Pavlos Pavlou said the institution will be the first out of 164 institutions in Nigeria to make a difference.
According to him, it will offer students an opportunity of training in emerging fields such as forensic science, naval science, forensic engineering, cyber security and ship building which are completely new knowledge to the Nigeria society.
Pavlos said the University has already received about 18, 000 applications from professionals seeking to fill the 45 positions for senior academic staff.
He added that the institution which is open to the general public will produce industry ready graduates to take up skilled jobs or create jobs for themselves and employ others.
He said the University is in partnership with the UK police to train students in forensic science and other emerging fields needed.
The Vice President of ADUN for enrollment management and University relations, Linus Ikyurav noted that the institution has a flexible model for tuition fee payment adding that installment payment of three times is allowed if the student can’t pay once.
The Admiralty University of Nigeria is a public-private partnership between the Nigerian Navy through its investment arm (Navy Holdings) and the Hellenic Education, an international educational organization.
