A political rights activist and chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Willy Ezugwu, has strongly warned that the “impending anarchy in the country as a result of the continued confrontation between the executive arm of the federal government and the legislature is capable of derailing Nigeria’s democracy if allowed to fester”.
The member of the APGA’s Board of Trustees and the Secretary General of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in a private statement issued in Abuja noted that “the current bickering over the delayed passage of the 2018 budget and the cat and mouse game between the two arms of government over the supplementary appropriation bill by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a mere symptom of a catastrophic consequences of the ongoing altercation between them.”
He maintained that “the unending dispute is egoistic, unnecessary and unhealthy for democracy in any society, resulting in the ongoing defections with the people’s mandate given to respective political parties they used to clinch power and the continuation of the era of political prostitution by serving elected office holders.
“The Nigerian people are the greatest losers in this selfish political gangsterism. And I urge every lover of democracy in the world to speak up now in defence of the Nigerian democracy because a stitch in time saves nine.
“As a Nigerian, I have watched with dismay as our hitherto exulted leaders are sacrificing our hard earned democracy on the alters of ego, nepotism and greed for power at the expense of the suffering masses who elected them with hope of a better wellbeing.
“The current state of affairs in Nigeria is frightening and if the executive and the legislature at the center cannot work together and the status quo maintained, I am afraid that the imminent anarchy could be the worst threat to democracy ever in Nigeria.
“It is about time we played politics as sports men and women if only our reason for seeking elective political office is to serve the Nigerian people and not to decimate democratic principles”, he counseled.
