Another Suicide bomb attack on University of Maiduguri Foiled; bomber killed

A suicide bomb has been detonated a bomber at about 9.50am this morning in the University of Maiduguri, making it the fifth in less than one week.

Saturday morning’s attack was foiled, unknowingly, by a university security guard who the bomber thought was after him.

It was learnt that he security man, stationed at the ETF Lecture Theaters where students were having their examinations, went to a nearby ditch along the university’s Gate 5 – leading to Mairi, a sprawling university settlement – to ease himself.

He parked his bicycle by the ditch and jumped in to answer the call of nature not knowing that the suicide bomber was hidden inside planning on how to reach the nearby lecture theaters and wreak maximum havoc.

On sighting the security guard and seeing how he gallantly jumped into the pitch, thinking it was to challenge him’, the bomber panicked and detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strapped to him which killed him.

A statement by NEMA signed by Abdulkadir Ibrahim, Information officer, NEMA North East zone said, “Today 20/5/2017 some minutes past 10 am, one male adult suicide bomber hid in the bush within the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) community surrounding, supposedly trying to gain access into university where students are gathering.

“Unfortunately for him the IED exploded and killed him. No casualty was recorded.

“Emergency workers from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and that of the state (BOSEMA) were drafted to the scene.

“The corpse of the suspected suicide bomber has been deposited at Borno specialist hospital.”
