Army War College Nigeria, Participants embark on Theater Operations visit to ‘Operation Whirl Stroke’.

In line with the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) mission statement to produce well trained, educated and inspired operational level leaders for the Nigerian Army, participants of AWCN Course 2/2018 embarked on operational theatre visit to Operation Whirl Stroke in Benue State.

The visit was aimed at exposing the participants to Operation Whirl Stroke operational plans with a view to conducting an assessment of the operation.

The theme for the operational visit was “Enhancing the capabilities of the Nigerian Army in Combating Internal Security Challenges”.

The AWCN team comprised the Commandant Major Gen EJ Enenche, four members of faculty and 33 participants.

The Force Commander Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General MA Yekini while briefing the team said his troops are made up of Special Operation Forces (SOF) who are well trained and capable of engaging adversaries in close quarter battle.
He noted that Operation Whirl Stroke covers Nasarawa, Benue and Tara a States.

Major General Yekini said the mandate of the force was to destroy identified camps used by militia elements and other criminal groups in the 3 States with a view to creating conducive atmosphere for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to return to their communities and reclaim their farmland abandoned due to incessant attacks

The Force Commander said since the commencement of Operation Whirl Stroke over 157,000 IDPs have returned to their respective homes, various kinds of assorted weapons recovered and several militia suspects arrested and handed over to relevant authorities in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba States.

In his remarks, the leader of the visiting team Major General EJ Enenche stated that the visit was to enable the participants conduct an assessment of the operational plans of Operation Whirl Stroke with a view to contributing to the ongoing operations.

He reiterated that the knowledge gained would reinforce the participants’ understanding of tactical and operational estimates

The highlights of the visit included operational brief by the Force Commander, interaction between the troops committed to the operation and participants of AWCN, a riverine patrol demonstration at the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering and briefing by Sector 3 Commander at Giza in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
