Bunkering: Navy hands 5 arrested vessels to NSCDC
The Nigerian Navy has handed over five (5) arrested illegal oil bunkering vessels caught in the Niger Delta to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for prosecution.
Confirming the development when he received the Commander, Naval Unit, Abuja; Commodore Ngolmo Poyilma Aliyu in his office, Commandant General of NSCDC, Abdullahi Gana said that necessary legal action will be taken by the corps as the agency in charge protection of critical infrastructure and national assets in relation to the offenses committed by the impounded vessels.
The NSCDC boss acknowledged the existing collaboration and enviable synergy between the Corps and the Nigerian Navy, especially in the fight against illegal bunkering, oil theft and vandalism.
Continuing, Gana recalled that, “the Navy as one of the foremost security stakeholders had arrested suspects and impounded their vessels and other ships which have always being handed over to the Corps for investigation and prosecution in line with our mandate.”
He added that the NSCDC whose responsibility include the registration, regulation, monitoring of the Private Guards industry, is working towards ensuring that criminal elements are not recruited as private guards.
Gana further disclosed that he is poised to transform the private guard industry to an enviable position that could attract qualified and able Nigerians into the profession.
“This is to ensure that as the Third Tier of Security, the Private Guards companies play complementary role to the regular Security Agencies of Government in line with the UN Charter which emphasizes the need for one policeman to 400 people for effective policing of the society.”
In the area of Disaster Management, the NSCDC boss said the Corps as one of the critical stakeholder has put in place mechanism for timely intervention during emergency situations, rescue operations, early warning alert signal and mitigation.
Responding, Commodore Ngolmo Aliyu said his visit is to solicit for synergy and collaboration in fighting crime within the Federal Capital Territory and environs.
Aliyu asserted that the Nigerian Navy is one of the organizations that believe in synergy and respects the function of other Agencies of Government noting that instead of unhealthy rivalry, partnership in fighting crime is more desirable.
Ngolmo added that, considering the role of the Corps in the Protection of Critical Infrastructure and National Assets, the Corps has performed creditably well saying collaboration with the navy will help in tackling the hydra headed crime, as well as fighting insurgency.
He then called on all Agencies to see each other as one considering the fact that, all are creation of the Federal Government established to fight a common cause.
