Against the backdrop of the seeming rise in cases of car theft within FCT, especially the ones that are easily removed from where parked, the FCT Police Command on Wednesday said it has set in motion, machinery to implement new strategies aimed at checkmating the menace.
“The Police Command is going to embark on vigorous stop and search operations along the highways noting that consequently, “members of the public are hereby advised to always have proof of ownership of their cars in their possession to avoid police embarrassment” it said.
In a statement signed by DSP Anjuguri Manzah, Public relations Officer of the Command, the Police said, “The following tips hereby are given to safeguard people’s vehicles of from being stolen easily.
“Car owners should install trackers, alarm and other anti-theft devices in their cars; Car owners should lock their cars with either pedal or steering lock; Cars should be parked at well-lit area, especially at night and Car owners should keep their vehicle locked at all times, even while driving.

Other tips are that, “When parked, keys should not be left in the car. All the windows and sunroof should be closed; Valuables such as brief cases, hand bags, etc should not be kept in public view; and Car owners should not leave your original particulars in the car.
Furthermore, “Car owners should learn to memorize their vehicle numbers, colour any other vital detail that will aid in identification; Car owners should not park their cars in a position that the car can be easily moved; Drivers should endeavour to leave their glass wind up and apply central door lock, especially when driving in areas poorly lit.
“Do not stop to offer lift to strangers, especially at isolated places; Commercial drivers should be vigilant when carrying passengers at night; And as a driver when you are not comfortable with your passenger drive to the nearest police stop and search point and lodge your complaint.
Continuing the police said, “Motorcycle operators should be vigilant and avoid isolated areas at night.,
