About 270 basket ball players from Abuja, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Kogi states comprising teams from the military and security services as well as youth teams in the FCT and environs, are to participate in the Chief of Defence Staff, Democracy Day Basketball Competition being sponsored by the CDS, General Christopher Gwabin Musa.
The Democracy Day competition which is slated to hold from the 9th of June to 12th of June will have 10 male teams and 4 female teams competing for honours that will include trophies and other prizes.
Chairman of the organizing committee, Brigadier General AO Abdullahi (rtd) while briefing the press said the objective of the competition, is to use sports as a non kinetic approach in the fight against insecurity in the society and in the country.
“It will be the first edition and it would involve youth teams from Abuja, teams from the military and security agencies.
“To ensure inclusivity, we have invited competitors from the Academia, the University and veteran sports basketball groups

“It’s intent is to promote sportsmanship among youths, national unity and integrity.It is to encourage youths within Abuja to take to sports and keep them off crime and other vices that may cause untoward challenges to the society.
The competition will hold simultanously at two venues, the Monaliza Sports and Recreation Centre, Garki And the Old Parade Ground.
In his remarks at the briefing, OSMA President and newly elected Vice President of World Military Sports Organization, CISM, Major General Maikano Abdullahi said that following his election as VP of CISM and stewardship in OSMA, Nigeria has been awarded the hosting rights for the African Military Games later this year.
“About 3,000 sportsmen from across the continent will gather in nigeria to compete and fight for laurels. It will be a big boost to Nigeria economically and will boost the nation’s image internationally.
On his part, the Director of Sports at Defence headquarters, AVM Marquis said that due to the various sporting engagements of the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa and the services, several military sportsmen and women who have done the nation proud in the Olympics, the Commomwealth games, All African games and World Athletics championships have been produced
AVM Marquis said the doors of the military is open through recruitments into the services of budding and aspiring sportsmen and women who want to attain great heights in various sporting disciplines.
