COAS bags’ International Human Rights Commission Commendation Award for troops display of professionalism during 2019 General Election.

Following what it described as the display of high professional conduct by officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in the 2019 General elections, the International Human Rights Commission, African Office, has presented a commendation award to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai.
Noting that the adherence to the code of conduct by troops under the watch of the Army Chief played a significant role in the professionalism displayed, the Human Rights Commission who said it worked in concert with committee of foreign observers commended the disciplined approach of the Service during the polls despite pre-meditated provocation by politicians.
Head of the delegation, Mr. Semaka Setuk Solomon said the professional conduct of the Nigerian Army is imperative and symbolic for other African countries to imitate.
He said, “Nigeria, having been touted as the giant of Africa, in terms of population, geography, human and mineral resources should lead this aggressive revolution of Human Rights for Freedom and liberty.
“The International Human Rights Commission and Committee of Foreign Observers hold the view that the Nigerian Army exhibited acceptable restraint and discipline in the face of provocation by politicians, which is commendable.
“We note and view this achievement as a milestone and major revolution for democracy on the African continent. This is especially so, given that other civilization have relegated Africa as a continent of nations without regard to Human Rights especially during critical processes,”.
“This is imperative in order that the military of sister African Nations will emulate.
“Indeed, the Nigerian Army under your able leadership and with the assistance of your lieutenants have demonstrated the willingness, the desire, the determination, the resolve and capacity to take Africa’S military by the hand and lead by example .
“On behalf of the International Human Rights Committee on civil military relations and foreign observers committee, I congratulate you (COAS) and the Nigerian army for such an achievement for Nigeria and Africa but more importantly, for the united nations and mankind”.
Responding, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai who was represented by Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP), Major Gen Ali Nani thanked the commission for objectively observing the activities of the Nigerian Army during the conduct of the just concluded polls.
He noted futile attempts by mischief makers to discredit the Nigerian Army while stating that the Service will continue to discharge its constitutional roles as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.
The international Human Rights plaque and certificate for professionalism was later received by Major General Nani at the ceremony attended by Principal Staff and Directors at Army headquarters.
