Collapsed Jetty: Delta Safe Commander, Rear Admiral Apochi Escapes Disaster in Cross River State.

The Commander of ‘Operation Delta Safe’, the Joint Security Task Force for Niger Delta, Rear Admiral Suleiman Apochi has escaped a major disaster.

The disaster occurred at Ikang in Cross River State when the Commander and top officers of Delta Safe conducted a tour of facilities under his command with one of the jetty where they were standing collapsing and some officers falling into the river.

The Coordinator of the Joint Media Center for the Joint Task Force, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi however said some of the officers that fell into the water only sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

A statement by Major Abdullahi in Yanegoa on Tuesday said, ‎”As part of ‘Operation Safety Check (3)’ which is designed to check troop’s deployment and activities at  various locations across the Niger Delta, a mishap was averted on Tuesday at the northernmost Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) location at Ikang, Cross Rivers State.

“The Commander OPDS, Rear Admiral Apochi Suleiman, Commander Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS) Victory, Operation Delta Safe Component Commanders, Commander Sector 4 along with other Senior Officers and soldiers, all fell into Ikang River as a result of the complete collapse of the Jetty at Ikang at about 10:00am.

“However, as a result of the survival capability of the Officers and Men, all personnel, weapons and other equipment were recovered with slight injuries to some personnel which have been treated.

“The team has retired back to Calabar to re-strategize and go ahead with the planned patrol and inspection.”
