Communal Clashes/Loss of 15 Lives: Delta Police Command Arrest Traditional Chief, 11 Others.

The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday threw caution aside and arrested three community leaders over the recalcitrance of their community to sheathe the sword in the unending communal clashes that has led to several losses of lives and destruction of property.

 Fifteen (15) persons have so far lost t their lives or gone missing in the clashes.

 The communities involved are Amai, Umuebu, Eziokpo and the bone of contention has been dispute over land matters leading to kidnappings, killings and disappearance of persons.

 A statement by the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Zanna entitled ‘Arrest and Prosecution of Community Leadership’ said, the arrests are “In view of the unabated reported cases of Abduction/Kidnapping /Missing Persons/Killings by Umuebu/ Eziokpor/Amai Communities over land matters that has persisted despite all reasonable efforts to contain their excesses

 The statement said, “15 persons have so far been declared dead, missing as a result of the crisis”

 It said, “On Tuesday, at about 2pm, the following community leaders from the three warring communities were arrested and charged to court on 3-count charge of murder, promoting native war and engaging in warlike manner.

 They are High Chief Benson Aloru JP, and 11 others for flouting the Security Council resolution for cessation of further hostilities.

 The suspects would be remanded in police custody pending assumption of jurisdiction and further developments.
