The National Defence College Nigeria and the College of International Security Affairs – National Defence University Washington is holding a bilateral training workshop for strategic level training on counter terrorism and irregular threats from 30 April to 4 May 2018.
The Inauguration Ceremony took place at the Abacha Hall, National Defence College on 30 April 2018.
The workshop is geared towards training strategic level officers in Nigeria and some International countries in order to make meaningful contribution towards counter terrorism and irregular threats in the country.
The plenary was to cover fundamental of contemporary irregular warfare, root causes of irregular conflict as drivers of alienation and radicalization, counter terrorism/counter insurgency at the strategic level.
Other areas the plenary covered include transnational crime in the Sahel, Nigeria experience in counter terrorism/counter insurgency and organized crime and violent extremism in West Africa, the Nexus and Linkages.
It is expected that at the end of the workshop, participants would be able to evaluate the strategic estimate template as a critical tool in dealing with current challenges, differentiate between terrorism as a method and terrorism as logic as well as to understand the implications for strategic response.

 Also, participants are expected to evaluate the utility and limitations of counter insurgency doctrine and principle, conduct a strategic assessment of Operation Lafia Dole and understand the nexus and linkages between transnational crimes and violent extremism in West Africa.
Prior to the Inauguration Ceremony, the Vice President, College of International Security Affairs, National Defence University Washington, Ambassador Mike Hammar paid a courtesy call on the Commandant, National Defence College Nigeria, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo to discuss issues of interest to both institutions.
Ambassador Hammar asserted that in spite of the benefits of such a workshop, it would go a long way in strengthening the relationship between the Defence University and the College.
 Ambassador Hammar was accompanied by two senior staff of the University during the courtesy call. Â
In his remarks, Rear Admiral Osinowo assured the visiting team of the readiness of the College to further corporate with the National Defence University in any relevant area of interest.
He reiterated that the Workshop is a step towards strengthening the relationship between the two institutions.
He acquainted the visitors with the activities of the College and affirmed that the College is of International Standard and that it has participants from Asia, Europe and part of Africa.
The Commandant, National Defence College Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo used the opportunity to advise participants to make strategic level contributions during the workshop and come up with actionable communiqué during the workshop.
