The wife of the President, Dr Mrs Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has commended the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) for the tremendous social intervention and empowerment programmes executed by its current Leadership.
The first lady gave the commendation at the DEPOWA book launch and public presentation of a book published in honour of Mrs Omobolanle Olonisakin, the incumbent President of DEPOWA.
Mrs Aisha Buhari expressed happiness that DEPOWA intervention in the area of human capital development is coming at a time when the United Nations (UN) is promoting and implementing human capital development as one of the integral Sustainable Development Goals of the world body.
The first lady gave the commendation at the National Defence College (NDC), in commemoration of the 2019 DEPOWA week.
Mrs Aisha Buhari who was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion, also unveiled the book titled “Nigeria’s Defence and Security: The Role of Military Families, essays in honour of Mrs Omobolanle Olonisakin, the DEPOWA President.
While expressing her satisfaction on DEPOWA’s resolve towards promoting unity and peace beyond the barracks, Dr Aisha Buhari noted that the Association is responsibly contributing its quota in national development through diverse social-economic empowerment programmes targeted at the less privileged.

She urged the DEPOWA members to remain advocates of peace while promoting values that will further encourage harmony and prevent social vices and criminality in the society.
Mrs Buhari also appreciated the Federal Government and the Armed Forces of Nigeria for taking bold steps to improve the national security, adding that they should not relent in ensuring that peace is restored in all troubled parts of the country.
Earlier in her remarks, the DEPOWA President, Mrs Olonisakin said the publication of the book which would be useful for academic research and public enlightenment was mooted during the Association’s National Conference held in 2018.
Mrs Olonisakin recalled that the Conference further stimulated the consciousness of its members on their role in security matters as wives of military and police officers.
According to her, the book would be helpful in profering solutions to issues concerning military families.
Mrs Olonisakin urged both the AFN and the Nigeria Police to patronize the book, noting that it is indeed a veritable research material for the services.
She disclosed that the proceeds from the launching would be used for charity, especially for widows and children of fallen heroes who paid the supreme sacrifice.
The book which is dedicated to widows and wards of fallen heroes was reviewed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin and Professor Isaac Adeyemi Adebayo, Vice Chancellor Bells University of Technology, Ota.
