Elections: University Don Salutes Army’s Doggedness towards enabling environment for peaceful polls; Commend Buratai over adherence to rules of engagement

Against the backdrop of criticism of the military’s involment in providing conducive environment for the 2019 general election, a University Don, Prof Idris Amali has urged Nigerians to rather salute the doggedness and resolute commitment of the military which has helped stabilized the polity for the polls to hold.

The don particularly hailed the determination of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General TY Buratai who did everything possible to ensure that troops deployed for the elections not only performed their constitutional mandate of providing support to the Nigerian Police in accordance to the law but also followed the code of conduct spelt out for them.

It would be recalled that the COAS has also set up a high powered Special Investigation Panel of senior officers to handle cases of alleged soldiers misdemeanor or act contrary to the code of conduct during the elections.

Of great importance to the involvement of the military and other security agencies in ensuring election security during the polls, is the establishment of the Nigerian Army Situation Room through which several issues of security breaches and attempts to foist violence have been identified and arrested

Speaking in an interview, Prof Amali, a Professor of Oral Literature said, “We must commend the military in its present commitment to remain consistent and operating within the ambit of its constitutional provision to be apolitical.

“The Nigerian Military we are confident realizes more than ever in our current political dispensation that they are a stabilizing force creating enabling peace and environment for democratic governance to thrive even when the civil provokes its stability through politically motivated and unguarded utterances against the military.

“We need a strong military to stand against those against Nigerian dreams and aspirations as we must commend the doggedness and ruggedness of the current Chief of Army Staff to build a strong Nigerian military through the goodwill of the Buhari led administration to build a proud Nigerian Military that will stand to defend the Nigerian state.

“Those who hate the current intermediary role of the civilized military are themselves enemies of Nigeria and beneficiaries of the spoils and loots of this nation.”
