The Senate has condemned in strong terms, criminal activities of Fulani herdsmen in Ewu, Edo State.
The upper chamber of the National Assembly also observed a minute’s of silence for those who lost their lives in the attack and urged the security agencies in the country to arrest the perpetrators who derive pressure in committing such criminal activities in the country.
The Senate also urged National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately send relief materials to the people of Ewu to ameliorate their sufferings resulting from the attack.
The decisions of the Senate followed a motion raised through Senate standing order 42 and 52 by Senator Clifford Odia (Edo Central) on the need to curtail criminal activities of Fulani herdsmen in Edo State.
According Odia, Fulani herdsmen invaded several farms in Ewu on May 22nd, 2017 and raped two women (Mrs. Maltina Omoyo and Mrs. Ariyo). He added that sadly, the youths from the community who embarked peaceful protest against this criminal activity of the Fulani herdsmen were shot at by security agencies.
“On May 22nd Fulani herdsmen invaded farms in Ewu destroying crops and raped two women (Mrs. Maltina Omoyo and Mrs. Ariyo). Youths from the community who embarked peaceful protest against this criminal activity of the Fulani herdsmen were shot at by security agencies,” Odia said.
Supporting the motion Senator Francis Alimikhena (Edo North) described activities of Fulani herdsmen in Edo State as another form of Boko Haram.
He said another community in Edo North was also attacked for days by Fulani Herdsmen.
“As we speak people in my constituents cannot go to their farm due to fear of Fulani Herdsmen attack,” Alimikhena said.
In his reaction the Senate President Bukola Saraki said there is a committee already in place to look at the criminal activities of the killer herdsmen in the country.
