Guard’s Brigade 3rd Quarter Short Talk Competition 2017 Kicks-Off at Scorpion Officers Mess; GMD Army Welfare Holdings Tasks Troops on Communication Skills.

The Guards Brigade, Nigerian Army on Tuesday kicked-off its 3rd Quarter Inter-Unit Short Talk Competition, 2017 at the Scorpion Officers Mess, with participating troops drawn from the Battalions and Garrison spread across the FCT, Nasarawa and Niger States.

The participating units included the 177 Guards Battalion, the Guards Brigade Garrison, the 7 Guards Battalion, 102 Guards Battalion and the 176 Guards Battalion.

The completion which is aimed at building capacity for troops of the elite brigade, seeks to improve and enhance proficiency of communication skills among other skills.

Speaking on the importance of the Talk Competition, Brigadier General Adeyemi Odunayo Adetayo, Group Managing Director, Nigeri8an Army Welfare Holdings Limited noted that while it is a fact that the most effective way to communicate is through speech, the importance of effective communication in ‘our’ day to day interaction cannot be over-emphasized.

“It is against this backdrop and in line with Nigeria Army’s Forecast of Events and Guards Brigade Training Doctrine 2017 that this Short Talk Competition has become necessary. You must therefore continue to take advantage of the  training opportunity provided by the Brigade” he told the participants.

Furthermore he told the soldiers, “You must always remember the 4 communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are all interconnected”.

“Proficiency in each skill is therefore necessary to become a good communicator which this Short Talk and the previous ones organized by your Brigade aims to achieve at the end of the day”.

“This exercise will improve your capacity to put out words together in a meaningful way to reflect your thought, opinions, and feeling. You must also not forge that speaking skills can enhance one’s personal life, thereby bringing about the well rounded efficiency we seek through this session”.

The Commander, Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Musa S. Yusuf and convener of the Short Talk Competition was represented at the opening ceremony by the Chief of Staff of the Brigade.

Winners of the Competition to be determined by a panel of judges pulled from sister services and Para-military agencies will be presented prizes at the end of the Short Talk event.
