In his remarks, the Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Major General Garba Wahab (rtd) asserted that Nigeria must drive solutions for its problems locally emphasizing that solutions for Nigeria’s problems are in the hands of Nigerians.
The Executive Director, of Development Specs Academy DSA, Professor Okey Ikechukwu commended the Nigerian Army for its continued commitment in containing threats such as farmer herders clashes, banditry, and oil theft amongst others with a multifaceted approach, in collaboration with sister services head-on.
He said that the historical, combination of kinetic and non-kinetic approaches achieves better successes and it has become pertinent to apply a whole-of-society approach in tackling these challenges.
In proffering solutions, Prof Okey said, “We require citizens support, citizens engagement, restrictive justice initiatives, effective border management, skill acquisition programs, intensive agricultural schemes, inclusive governance and effective poverty alleviation”
The Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Ndace in a presentation emphasised the importance of national interest reportage by the media and getting the Nigerian Army to be positioned and perceived well in society.
He pointed out that the media space has expanded giving birth to the issue of fragmented audience while the biggest challenge for the Nigerian Army and other agencies is winning the hearts of the people.
“The Army must seize the high ground of narrative the way it seized the high ground of battle. They must be deliberate about how they share their stories, the Army needs more advocacy that can defend and uphold its image
“While the command and control structures may be a limitation for the Nigerian Army in terms of timeliness of dissemination of information, a chain of command, every military deployment and operation should have a media plan around it, as well as a skilled strategic communicators.
