INTERPOL Set to Host African Working Group Meeting in Abuja over Upsurge in Cyber Criminality; As DIG FCID Harps on Its Potency Against Cross Border Crimes

Following investigative breakthroughs recorded by the Nigeria Police force in busting of complicated/organized cyber criminal attacks both within and outside the country through the National Central Bureau, the International Police Organization INTERPOL is set to hold the Interpol Africa Working Group Committee Meeting on Cyber Crime in Abuja from April 29th to May May 3rd, 2024

Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge Force Criminal Investigations Department, DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi made this known on Thursday, noting that Nigeria’s selection for the Interpol meeting is a fallout of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s determination in making our country a safe place for citizens and foreigners to transact and do business seamlessly.

Speaking while inaugurating the committee to oversee the meeting, DIG Alabi said, “The approval of the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun for Nigeria to host the 10th African Working Group meeting on Cybercrime is a testimony of IGPs determination in making our country a safe place for citizens and foreigners to transact and do business seamlessly.

“It should be noted that INTERPOL is an integral part of the Force Criminal
Investigation Department and a driving force in combating crime and
criminality within and outside Nigeria.

“The INTERPOL has discharged
their core responsibilities with flying colours around the world, hence,
our hosting of this event, is in itself an epoch making event considering
the sophistication of the act/crime of cyber crime and attacks being perpetrated using the internet or cyberspace as the case may be.

“This inauguration will assist the participants to be abreast with their areas of responsibility and work assiduously for the success of the programme” he said.

He listed terms of refence to guide the committee to include ‘Working with INTERPOL officials to identify and secure suitable Hotels to host the event; Assist in facilitating visa and travel documentation for the participants to the event.

Others include ‘Support in securing safe passage and transit to and from the Airport and Hotels for the participants and the need to ‘Reach out to relevant Government officials and agencies to grace the Meeting at the opening event.

“Support with setting up of a Meeting secretariat and other support
services while Sub-committees should be set up for the success of the forthcoming event according to their areas of responsibilities.

The DIG pointed out that the IGP Egbetokun and the entire management team of the Force are looking out for a well organized and successful programme that will place Nigeria at par and even better than other host nations of the past editions.

In his remarks, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of INTERPOL Nigeria, AIG Stanley Kanayo Ude said 54 countries which make up the African membership of Interpol and representatives of other continents would be participating in the meeting.

He said, “Interpol comprises of 196 countries drawn from all the continents around the world. Nigeria is very respected that is why Interpol reached out to Nigeria, to host this crucial meeting on cybercrime.

“The giant strides recorded bycseveral breakthroughs in the complex, diligent and technology based investigations and successes within and other the country has put the Nigerian Police and the uograded Cyber crime branches driven by the IGP under the guidiance of the DIG Force Criminal Investigation Department in the front burner.

“Such breakthroughs in investigation include arrests of email harkers, yahoo boys, cyber theft arrests, fishing, stalking and other emerging cyber criminal atracks abroad”.
