June 12, 1993 election: Fayose tells Buhari to Declare Abiola President.

Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to go the whole hog and declare the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election in addition to the conferment of the national honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic on him.

He stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday while reacting to the conferment of the national honour on the late Abiola by Buhari.

According to the governor, whether the step taken by the President was political or not did not matter, “but that the President should know that whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.”

Fayose said: “It is necessary to lend my voice to the honour done the late Chief MKO Abiola. If it is a politically-motivated step, that does not matter. It is a step in the right direction.

“The President should go the whole hog and declare Abiola the winner of that election and the president elected on that basis. Abiola won the presidential election of June 12, 1993.

“The military and the dictator then denied him that honour. Beyond that, you cannot give the national honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic to anybody without the person being the President.

“Therefore President Buhari should ensure that the full results of the election are announced and MKO Abiola declared the winner.

“One of the lessons this has taught us is that whatever is hidden will come to the open one day. Moreover, whatever we do will become part of history tomorrow.

“And those who feel they can subvert the will of the people expressed through elections must learn from this. The voice of the people cannot be suppressed forever.”
