Kachikwu confirms leaked letter on alleged illegalities, insubordination against Baru NNPC GMD, insists ‘I am doing my job’

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has confirmed the leaked letter written to President Muhammadu Buhari alleging insubordination and illegal and unapproved acts against the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru.

The letter written since August 30 was leaked on Tuesday.

According to the minister, he was not only doing his job as expected of him by the President Buhari, he remained undistracted from the ultimate mandate of transforming the petroleum sector with the support of the President.

This was revealed in a statement in Abuja signed by the Director of Press in the ministry of Petroleum Resources, Idang Alibi, dated October 3, 2017.

The statement entitled ‘PUBLICATION OF A CONFIDENTIAL OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE’ reads, “The attention of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources has been drawn to a publication on a memo emanating from the HMSPR to the President.

“Please note the following:

“The communication under reference is a normal procedural correspondence by the Minister to the President relating to developments in Parastatals under his supervision.

“It is most distressing to the ministry of petroleum resources that a confidential communication to the President on the performance of one of its Parastatals can be made public.

“The focus of the communication was on improving efficiency and deepening transparency in the oil and gas sector for continued investor confidence.

“It is noteworthy that the President has been fully supportive of the efforts of the Ministry to entrench good governance and accountability in the oil and gas sector.

“The Ministry of Petroleum Resources remains focused on achieving measurable progress in the implementation of the ongoing oil sector reforms in line with the mandate of the President.”

Dr. Kachikwu had written President Muhammadu Buhari regarding alleged acts of illegalities and insubordination by the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, urging Buhari to salvage the sensitive petroleum sector.

The minister’s letter reads, “Parastatals in the ministry and all CEOs of these Parastatals must be aligned with the policy drive of the ministry to allow the sector register the growth that has eluded it for many years

“To do otherwise or to exempt any of the Parastatals would be to emplace a stunted growth for the industry.”

The minister disclosed that he wrote the August 30 letter to Mr. Buhari after concerted efforts to have a one-on-one appointment with the president at the State House fell through.

The letter emerged on the Internet early on Tuesday quoting the minister saying he suffered “disrespectful and humiliating conducts” from Mr. Baru.
