Against the backdrop of increasing spate of kidnapping and other crimes in parts of the zone, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, Benin City, Edo State, AIG Abubakar Mohammed directed Commissioners of Police under the zone to beef up security and intensify patrols to address the menace.
He charged the Commissioners of Police to rise up and ensure adequate security of lives and property by making life unbearable for criminal and kidnapping gangs whose suspected hideouts should be combed and cleaned out.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zone DSP Emeka Iheanacho, noted that the AIG gave the directive at a meeting with the CPs of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa.
Present at the meeting were CP Zannah Ibrahim, Commissioner of Police Delta State, CP Amba Asuquo, Commissioner of Police Bayelsa State and CP Johnson Kokumo, Commissioner of Police Edo State.

AIG Abubakar further directed the Command CPs to focus more on patrols, visibility policing and other crime preventing measures even as he noted that there are too many policemen attached to various units at the Command Headquarters.
He said these police personnel would have been more useful on patrol duties or carrying our visibility policing to deter commission of crime.
He therefore directed the Commissioners of Police to identify these units and ensure they are deployed to Divisions for visibility policing and patrol.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of intelligence led policing in the fight against crime and criminality urging the CPs to engage men of State Intelligence Bureau at their respective commands in this regards.
Reiterating that the ban on road block by the Inspector – General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris remains, AIG Abubakar directed the Commissioners of Police to ensure the enforcement of the directive at their respective commands.
He warned policemen in the habit of abandoning their duty post for illegal duties of the consequences when caught noting that there was need for commands to collaborate and work closely with the stakeholders and other non-state actors to ensure collaboration in the efforts to rid the zone of criminal elements and criminality
