Lagos Police Commissioner Clamps down on Policemen for Extortion, Attempted Murder and Robbery.

 The Police in Lagos have carried out a clampdown on police personnel involved in serious misconduct offenses including extortion, attempted murder and armed robbery in several parts of the state.

Towards this end, Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Fatai Owoseni said 6 policemen have been arrested along with two civilian accomplices.

The CP gave the names of the personnel arrested as Sergeant Silvanus Emoche, Sergeant Benjamin Oboh, Sergeant Onyenedu Kennedy, attached to Federal Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS, Ipakodo and Sergeant Monday Ehijiator, attached to Bariga Division.

On offences committed, it was learnt that Sergeant Sylvanus Emoche, attempted to kill a woman at Ajao estate area of the state by shooting sporadically during which a bullet damaged one FJ Cruiser SUV belonging to the woman.

During the incident which occurred on July 24th 2017, the woman, one Mrs. Okafor Oluchi was said to have resisted attempt by the policeman to forcefully take away an unregistered Honda Pilot SUV belonging to her husband, Mr. Okafor David, from their compound.

The attention of policemen from Ajao Division was drawn to the incident, and they rushed to the scene, whereby the policeman was disarmed and taken to the station.

During interrogation, Sergeant Emoche found to have visited the compound of the Okafor’s without the knowledge of Police authorities.

CP Owoseni added that at the time of committing the offence, the erring policeman had been demobilized from the Police Mobile Force 20 and subsequently transferred to Kogi State Police Command.

Regarding Sergeant Benjamin Oboh and Sergeant Onyenedu Kennedy, attached to Federal Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS, Ipakodo and Sergeant Monday Ehijiator, attached to Bariga Division the CP said they were arrested for extortion.

He said the three officers  went to Ikeja in a Toyota Camry car with number plates JN 470 KJA, in plain clothes, where they stopped one Adeshina Quwam Adekunle, accusing him of being an internet fraudster.

The policemen forcefully “collected N65, 000 from the victim. They also used his ATM card to collect an additional N40, 000 from an ATM machine. This happened on July 17”.

Additionally, “On July 19 2017, at about 10.35am, in the same spot, the three policemen stopped one Ghenoba Godspower, accusing him to be an internet fraudster again.

“He was also searched, during which N30, 000 was collected from him. In the process, the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, ACP Olatunji Disu, arrived with his patrol van and arrested the policemen. Three of them were tried in an orderly room and recommended for dismissal.”

The CP further said, two other policemen have been charged for defilement but their identities were not made public.
