Manhandling of Senator Melaye/Herdsmen Killings: IG’s failure to attend security briefing a threat to democracy – Saraki.

President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said that the failure of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to show up for security briefing on the killings across the country is a threat to democracy.

Saraki made this known in a tweet via the verified Twitter handle, ‘The Senate President’.

The Senate had invited Idris to come and brief it on the killings in the country, but, for the second time in less than a week, the IG had declined to make physical appearance.

Last Thursday when he was supposed to appear before the Senate, he sent a Deputy IG, Joshak Habila, and went on a state visit with President Buhari to Bauchi.

The Senate refused to entertain Habila, insisting on having the IG.

On Wednesday (today), the IG sent Habila again, but the lawmakers condemned the action, saying it could jeopardize democracy.

One of the tweets reads, “Today the President of the Senate Abubakar Bukola Saraki, reiterated that failure of the Inspector General of Police to show up for a security briefing is a threat to democracy.

The Senate Deputy Leader, Bala Ibn’Na’ allah also commenting on the IGP’s failure to appear said, “The Chairman of the Police Committee has said he is not able to reach him. What we have now is that there is no reason for his non appearance. In this kind of situation, I must say there is a very serious need to invite the IGP based on everything that has occurred.

Additionally, last time that we invited him, he approached a court. If after sending the DIG to approach the IGP on our invitation. I am in a state of shock that he has failed to appear. This does not take away the resolution of the Senate to continue to support Mr. President on security issues.

We need a delegation of this house to register the displeasure over the non appearance of the IG of Police. If we begin to have this kind of conduct, it is insulting our collective resolve of this senate to assist Mr. President, the Deputy Leader said.

Commenting, the President of the Senate said, I don’t want us to labour much on this issue. Being the upper chamber, atimes we must show maturity and statesmanship. Anybody who knows, know that this action cannot be right. We are not a senate in committee; we are a senate in plenary.

The IG has said he cannot come. He wants to delegate to a junior to come. Since we returned to democracy, there has been no IG that has refused to come. He is doing this and this is a threat to our democracy.

It is not only to us, it is also to the president. The President told him to go to Benue and he refused to go.
