The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has reiterated the commitment of the NAF towards improving the standard of education in its schools especially the education of the girl child.
Speaking at the end of the 2nd edition of the CAS Inter-NAF Secondary Schools Debate/Quiz Competition which held in Abuja, the Air Chief posited that educating the girl child contributes significantly to the development of a stable, prosperous and healthy nation whose citizens are active, productive and empowered.
Towards this end, Abubakar said, “The NAF under my leadership has not only established more NAF schools across the country, it has also established a Special School for Girls which is the Airforce Girls Comprehensive School, AFCGS Abuja.
“We are also in the process of reverting the Airforce Girls Comprehensive School AFCGS in Jos, back to the Airforce Girls Military School AFGMS”.
“Also, through the organization of competition such as this, the NAF hopes to ensure quality education, rekindle the spirit of healthy competition among NAF secondary schools and build confidence which will translate into excellent academic performance. From what I have seen, I have no doubt that the NAF has achieved its objective for organizing the competition”.
Continuing the CAS said, “Therefore, to assist the schools to maintain this excellent performance, the result of this competition as well as the results of SSCE and NECO will determine the number of digital interactive boards that the service will distribute to the schools. This will encourage schools to prepare very well for this competition”.

Giving further reasons why girl child education should be improved upon, he said, “Data indicates that in Nigeria, over 5.5million girls are out of school. Nearly two-thirds of women in the North East and North West regions have no education compared to other parts of the country”.
“To enhance our national development therefore, girls education should be one of our best investments. Educated women are less likely to die in childbirth and more likely to have healthy and well-nourished children than their non-educated counterparts.
“A child born to a literate mother is more likely to survive past the age of 5. The children of educated women are more likely to go to school. Therefore, girls education spurs exponential positive effects on social and economic development for generations to come.
The Air Chief then directed that following the problem of power supply being experienced at the Airforce Comprehensive School, Ibadan, he has directed provision of a generator for the school while ten additional classrooms should be constructed to make classrooms comfortable for students.
At the end of the debate competition, Airforce Secondary School, Port Harcourt emerged champions defeating Airforce Comprehensive School, Ibadan by unanimous decision while Airforce Boys Military School, Jos came third.
In the Quiz Competition, Airforce Secondary school, Uyo emerged champions, Airforce Secondary School, Ikeja was second while Airforce Military School took third.
Miss Irobuisi Gloria Chinwe, an SSI student of Airforce Secondary School, Port Harcourt belonging to Mi-35 Helicopter Gunship House, emerged the overall best speaker.
