Nigeria High Commission donates to support completion of KAIPTC’s new Academic Block in Ghana

The Nigerian government on Tuesday, June 25th 2019, took steps to further cement the ties and relations between it and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) when the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Abikoye Femi Michael made a donation to support the completion of KAIPTC’s new Training and Academic Block.

The donation is to facilitate the construction of the Plaster of Paris (POP) for the building.

At a meeting with some members of KAIPTC’s Executive Management present, Ambassador Michael expressed his gratitude and admiration for KAIPTC’s work in building capacity for peacekeeping and peace support operations in Africa.

He noted that many Nigerians – both security personnel and civilians – have benefitted from KAIPTC’s courses.

He said the Federal Government of Nigeria therefore decided to support the delivery of KAIPTC’s courses by making a donation of $42,000 to shore up its efforts to expand its infrastructure to meet the increasing subscriptions to its programmes.

“The strings that bind these two African nations is firm and deeply rooted in time.

“One cannot talk about African cooperation and partnerships and ignore Nigeria and Ghana” he said.

Ambassador Michael suggested additional areas of cooperation to strengthen the cooperation between both parties.

Sharing some ideas on ways to deepen the Centre’s financial sustainability, the High Commissioner noted that the Centre’s strategic location is a strong advantage for pursuing Public Private Partnerships.

In a response, Ms Horname Noagbesunu, Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Department (PPMED) at KAIPTC noted that the donation is an historic one and a great privilege for KAIPTC.

She said: “This donation is a landmark event; it is an honour to have another African country supporting us”.

On behalf of the Executive Management and staff of the Centre, she expressed deepest gratitude to the Nigerian Government for their demonstration of true solidarity and support for the Centre.

It would be recalled that the Ghana Ministry of Defence (MoD) established the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in 1998 and commissioned it in 2004.

The purpose was to build upon and share Ghana’s five decades of internationally acclaimed experience and competence in peace operations with other states in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region and the rest of Africa.

This was in recognition of the need for training military, police and civilian men and women to meet the changing demands of multidimensional peace operations.

The Centre is one of the three (3) Peacekeeping Training Centres of Excellence mandated by the ECOWAS to offer training in peacekeeping and peace support operations (PSO) in Africa.

The Centre delivers training courses in three thematic areas; Peace Support Operations, Conflict Management and Peace and Security Studies and also runs Masters and PhD programmes in same.

The KAIPTC has a world-class research department that undertakes research in the thematic areas in Peace and Security.
