Amidst deadly border disputes and other bloody crisis which has threatened peace in the South East, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, has acknowledged the intervention of the Nigerian Army saying the Army has helped save a lot of lives and property.

The governor who is also Chairman of South East Governor’s Forum, gave the commendation at Army Headquarters on Monday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Tukur Yusuf Buratai.

The governor pointed out that several of the bloody crises that would have caused mayhem were nipped in the bud in several parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Benue, Cross River, and Benue States, in the past four years.

Emphasizing the need for community policing, he said Governors of the region have resolved to convene a Security Council meeting in their respective states to decide the number of road blocks and places that will be mounted by the Army, Police and other security agencies.

He used the opportunity of the visit to thank the Nigerian Army for maintaining neutrality and impartiality before, and during the last general elections in Ebonyi, and across the South East.

Governor Umahi further appealed to the COAS to give approval for the establishment of more Army formations and units in the Southern part of the State, in order to stem the wave of insecurity ravaging communities in the area.

He noted that temporary facilities are available for the take-off of such units if approval is swiftly given for the establishment, assuring that the State Government will provide basic infrastructure for the units or formations to be established by the Army Chief.

Responding, Lt. Gen. Buratai, lauded the developmental strides of the Governor, which he said has transformed Ebonyi, and also engendered peace and mutual cohesion in the State.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Umahi for rehabilitating dilapidated facilities and also constructing new structures at several Army Barracks in the Abakaliki.

Buratai pledged the Nigerian Army’s support to the governor, saying officers and men of the Nigerian Army will continue to be responsive and professional in the discharge of their constitutional duties in the South East.

The Chief of Policy and Plans Army, Lt Gen LO Adeosun, Chief of Training and Operations Maj Gen EO Udoh, Chief of Military Intelligence Maj Gen SA Adebayo, Director General Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Maj Gen Victor Ezugwu and the Provost Marshal Army Brig Gen H Ahmed were among the senior officers at the occasion
