The Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) in collaboration with British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT) and Cranfield University UK, successfully organized the maiden capstone course; a Strategic Development and Critical Thinking Course from 12-14 March 2019 at TY Buratai Hall AWCN.
It was facilitated by two eminent resource persons, namely, Professor Ann fitz-Gerald and Miss Pula Macphee from Centre for Defence Management and Leadership, Cranfield University UK.
A statement signed bt Major Osoba, spokesman Army War College, Nigeria (AWCN) said, “The course was well attended by participants drawn from the Military, Para-Military and civilians representing private organizations and banking sectors”.
The maiden capstone course on strategic development and critical thinking was officially declared open by the Commandant AWCN, Major General Charles Ofoche on the 12th Mar 2019.
The Commandant in his welcome address urged participants to utilise the opportunity provided by the course to acquire life-time skills that would impact on their organizations and private lives.
The course content was rich, illuminating and very educative as it featured lectures, syndicate discussions and exercises.
Some of the topics covered by the lectures include systems, creative and strategic thinking as well as approaches to the development of strategy and other decision-making models.

During the lectures, the facilitators were able to establish the nexus between systems, creative, critical and strategic thinking.
Participants were further exposed to the rudimentary application of the decision making tools in our everyday life.
The facilitators stressed the importance of the harmonious interaction of the 3 elements of thinking to a smooth functioning of any organization, businesses and society.
The high point of the course was the syndicate exercises where participants were able to practically test some of the assumptions, theories, models and ideas.
The discussion was further enhanced by the invaluable seminal inputs from the Commandant who was readily at hand to share knowledge and experience with participants.
The Commandant reminded participants of the changing dynamics in the world and the need to up their ante to be able to operate in such environment.
He specifically emphasized that the transition to 5G network would alter how things are done and creates more challenges and opportunities, therefore, participants should get themselves prepared to take advantage of the diverse opportunity that will present itself.
He further recommended a number of good books that would enrich participants’ knowledge and understanding of the world.
After 3 days of robust discussion, brain storming and cross fertilization of ideas, participants were presented with certificate of participation by the facilitators.
