Police Promotions: IGP Adamu Jetisons Unwholesome Practices; Restores (Best Practices) Elevation Based on Seniority

There are indications that the Nigerian Police Force under the leadership of Acting IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has jettisoned the unwholesome practices of throwing away merit and seniority in consideration for promotions of officers which were the hallmark of the immediate past police administration.

The practice which unfortunately was condoned by the former leadership of the Police Service Commission, created an atmosphere of insecurity within the Police force, disciplinary issues and elevated suspicion of ethnic favouritism.

Consequently, the age long policies of promotions after writing of examinations after attendance of relevant and required courses, wealth of experience and age on particular ranks and exposure in service, were thrown to the dustbin.

As a result, many of the officers who benefitted from this abnormally and were promoted higher than their deserved ranks, found it difficult to cope with the task of the new ranks and offices they found themselves which impacted negatively on the police force.

But IGP Mohammed Adamu, a product of the best principles and traditions of Policing worldwide, rising to the position of the Vice President if INTERPOL,and a lecturer of note in security studies at the highest levels, who knows the implications of such unwholesome practices and its damaging impact on discipline and authority, decided to restore normalcy.

“With the new policy of the IGP which is to strictly situate promotion within context of seniority, recent abuses of the recent past are hereby done with. So all those that benefited did so out of seniority. There were no special promotions” an officer told Securityking.

It is against this backdrop that the recent promotions of 8,919 officers of the Nigerian Police Force by the Police Service Commission on the recommendation of IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has been commended by security watchers and observers who believe the dwindling fortunes of the force would return soon

Recall that the Police Service Commission at the weekend approved the promotion of 8,916 senior Police Officers to their next substantive ranks to fill existing vacancies.

“The Commission approved the promotion of three Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police and the officers are, Jona Jackson Mava; Olushola Babajide David and Titus Sumba Larmode.

Among the 71 Assistant Commissioners of Police promoted to Deputy Commissioners of Police, is DCP Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO).

The acting appointments of two Commissioners of Police were also confirmed. The beneficiaries are; Rudolf Echebi Obe, Works and Danladi B. Lalas, Air Wing.
