Aftermath of a heavy gun fight between police officers attached to the Police Intelligence response team of the Inspector General of Police and kidnapping kingpins terrorizing Rivers and Bayelsa States, 3 of the kidnappers were fatally injured while one was arrested
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Don Awunah while making the disclosure in Abuja, said the arrested member of the gang, one James Peter, has been cooperating with the Police in the investigation while several arms and ammunition belonging to the gang have been recovered.
The FPRO said, “In continuation of targeted onslaught against crime and criminality throughout the country, the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) recorded a major breakthrough in Rivers and Bayelsa states.
“Acting on credible intelligence and public support, on the 29th of November, 2016, the IRT intercepted a four-man gang of heavily armed kidnappers, notorious for terrorizing the waterways and kidnapping in Rivers and Bayelsa states, along Azikiwe Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on their way for an operation.
“A gun duel ensued, after which three (3) of the kidnappers were fatally wounded while one James Peter ‘m’ aged 30 years from Southern Ijaw LGA of Bayelsa State was arrested.

“The arrested member of the gang has since been cooperating with the police in their investigation by providing very valuable information on the membership of the gang and their modus of operation.
“Weapons recovered from the kidnappers include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), one AK47 rifle, chains of GPMG ammunition and two fully loaded AK47 magazines.
“Efforts are in top gear to arrest fleeing members of the gang and recover their cache of arms.
An elated IGP Ibrahim Idris used the opportunity to urge Nigerians never to hesitate to provide the police with valuable information on the activities of criminals and assured of renewed commitment on the part of the force in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour.
Meanwhile, the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) has pledge to build a hospital and maternity at Akwanga, Nassarawa State as part of efforts to improve mother and child treatment for families of police officers in the country.
POWA President, Mrs. Asmau Ndayako Idris who made the disclosure at the annual general meeting of the association in Abuja, also said the group will embark on an environmental hygiene project tagged “Our Barracks Go Clean” which would be flagged off in a few days’ time.
Mrs. Idris further disclosed that adequate arrangement was being made to provide the educational needs of Police families in Kuje and its environs.
