Return to Status-quo: CAN hails FG over CRK, IRK curriculum reversal.

Days after the federal government ordered the policy reversal, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended the Federal Government for removing merger of the Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) and the Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

CAN further urged government “to review textbooks that are currently being used as some of them are encouraging ungodly practices like masturbation.”

President of CAN, Dr. Samson Ayokunle in a statement disclosed that by reversing the decision on the merger of CRK and IRK, government had shown that it has a listening ear and therefore, needed to be commended.

In the statement signed by Ayokunle’s Special Assistant (Media & Communications), Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the CAN leader said that the association’s intervention over the controversial merger doused tension in the country.

Excerpts of the statement, “The merger of the two subjects had been rejected long before the emergence of this government because it was done without the consent of all stakeholders including CAN and all efforts made to reverse the ungodly policy were fruitless until now.

“The reverse of the policy shows that we have a listening and sensitive government who is ready to reverse itself or any unacceptable policy when the need arises”.

“We ask the Federal Ministry of Education to review all the textbooks that are currently being used as some of them are encouraging ungodly practices like masturbation.

“We appreciate all well-meaning Nigerians, the media and the civil society for their roles while the controversy lasted.

“We pray for divine guidance and wisdom for our political leaders as they lead the country.”
