Troops of 82 division NA checkmate violent protest in Abia State over killing of citizen by Cultists

Troops of Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade on Wednesday checkmated a violent protest embarked upon at Umuokere Community in Obingwa LGA of Abia state following the killing of a citizen by cultists.

This is just as the Army denied social media insinuations that the victim of the cultists attack was felled by its personnel.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 division, Col Aliyu Yusuf titled ‘Troops of 14 Brigade Nigerian Army Stop Violent Incident at Umuokere Ngwa Community of Abia State’.

It said “The attention of 82 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to a violent incident involving an individual identified as Mr Chimobi Nnaorgu who allegedly lost his life from a gun shot injury inflicted on him by unknown gunmen suspected to be a cultists in camouflage T-Shirt at Umuokere Ngwa Community in Obingwa LGA of Abia State on Wednesday 7 August 2019.

“This incident resulted in a breakdown of law and order as youths in the community took law into their hands by burning down houses.

“Troops of 144 Battalion with the assistance of other security agencies have calm down the situation.

“I wish to state categorically that 82 Division troops deployed for any operation do not brutalise law abiding innocent citizens in line with Nigerian Army code of conduct for internal security operations.

“It is pertinent to state that the rumours trending in the social media that the man was killed by a soldier for refusing to give a bribe of #100.00 naira is false, untrue and misleading.

“While investigation is on going to unravel the perpetrator of this criminal act, our heartfelt prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr Chimobi.

“May God grant them the fortitude to to bear this irreparable loss.”
