Troop’s Retraining; to develop Counter Strategies to Tackle Asymmetric Security Challenges – Brig-Gen Fagge; As 7 Guards Battalion win Gds Brigade 2018 Inter-Unit Obstacle Competition.

The Nigerian Army said on Thursday that regular training and re-training of its personnel is necessary, to prepare and develop counter strategies to adequately deal with evolving security challenges.

Deputy Director, Navigation at the Defence Space Agency, Brigadier General Auwal Fagge (Guest of Honour) who made the disclosure at the 2018 Guards Brigade Inter-Unit Obstacle Crossing Competition in Abuja, also disclosed that the “attendant consequences of the asymmetrical dimension of the security challenges” therefore requires constant training at all levels.

Fagge said, “It is on this basis and in line with Chief of Army Staff vision of having ‘A professionally responsive NA in the discharge of its constitutional roles’ that Nigerian Army outlined series of training activities in 2018 Forecast of Events.

He said the event is intended to enhance troops’ physical fitness, combat survival as well as confidence and team spirit adding, “It would also build the Combat capacity of the participating units”.

“Therefore, the idea of organizing this important training event is commendable. I am aware that Guards Brigade has organized series of training activities in line with the Brigade Training Directives for 2018, the last of which was the Brigade Inter- Unit Drill Competition”.

Expressing delight that the Brigade is making efforts to improve professional standards of its personnel through training, Brig-General Fagge said, “I want to encourage the Brigade to continue to train hard and realistically to meet up with contemporary security challenges”.

“As it is said, ‘the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war”.

At the end of the rigorous obstacle crossing event, 7 Guards Battalion emerged champion in 37 minutes, 24 seconds; 176 Guards Battalion who were last year’s champion, emerged 2nd in 38minutes and 16 seconds.

Third position went to 177 Guards Battalion who completed the event in 42 minutes and 13 seconds; 4th position went to Guard Brigade Garrison who completed in 45 minutes and 49 seconds while 5th position went to Guards Brigade Garrison in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 35 seconds.

Guards Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Umar Tama Musa had earlier said the inter-unit obstacle competition was aimed which is in line with the Brigade’s Forecast of Events for year 2018, is an important aspect of military training aimed at enhancing troops physical fitness and combat survival.

“It is also aimed at evaluating troop’s confidence as well as promoting and enhancing team spirit amongst others.”
