The comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali was sent out of the Senate Chambers in Abuja Thursday after he appeared in civilian clothing.
There was clear hint that Ali had chosen to dare the Senate when he appeared in white Kaftan contrary to assertions by senators that he must appear before them in Customs uniform.
It was Deputy Senate President Ike Ekwemadu who first challenged Ali asking why he chose not wear the customs uniform
Ali, a former military administrator of Kaduna State replied that there was no law which compelled him to wear the uniform as he discharged his duties as CG.
The CG told the Senators that there was nowhere it was stated in the letter sent to him urging him to appear in customs uniform.
Several senators insisted he could only continue addressing the Senate if he wore the Customs uniform.
Thereafter, Senator George Sekibo moved the motion to send Ali out of the Chamber. It was seconded by Senator Barnabas Gemade.
The CG was asked to return next on Wednesday next week for interaction with the Senate on the now controversial vehicles’ customs duty matter.
