IDPs: US AID GROUP DONATES N100Million WORTH OF MEDICAL CONSUMABLES TO NAF.
An American aid group, Project Cure, on Monday donated a 40 feet container of medical equipment and consumables worth over N100million to the Nigerian Airforce for humanitarian assistance to Internally Displaced Persons at the largest IDP camp in Dalori, Borno State.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at the 209 Executive Airlift Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, Director of Medical Services, NAF, Air Vice Marshal Saleh Shinkafi noted that the equipment and medical consumables donated will assist in the setting up of upgrading the emergency hospital at IDPs Dalori Camp.
AVM Shikafi said, “Apart from winning the war on terror through deployment of air power to decimate and degrade the terrorists out of the North East, the NAF is also embarking on a comprehensive winning the hearts and mind campaign through coordinated humanitarian activities such as provision of medical outreach and amenities like potable water, tents for accommodation, and proper sanitary facilities for large population of IDPs found in various camps across the country.
“Through the establishment of the secondary healthcare facility in Dalori, Maiduguri, the NAF has provided direct medical care to over 30, 000 IDPs while over 5, 000 in-patients and out-patients have been provided medical facilities since the beginning of the programme” Shinkafi said.

Continuing AVM Shinkafi said, “Additionally, over 150 surgeries for various health conditions including eye surgeries were carried out for the IDPs”.
Giving an insight into some of the items donated, the Director said, “There are over 2, 000 items ranges from syringes, dressing materials, instruments, hospital trolleys and beds. From our experience in the IDP camps, these are the much needed supplies in all the camps and hence they will improve the health status and well-being of the IDPs attending the benefitting health facilities”.
“Some of the equipment will be used to enhance the NAF Emergency Hospital for IDPs at Dalori, establish a ward and delivery suite at the clinic in Maikohi IDP camp in Yola as well as three other health care facilities in IDP camps located in Maiduguri and Yola” he added.
Receiving the items from the US Country Director of Walter Reid Programme, Robbie Wilson, representative of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Ajibola Jekenu noted that winning the hearts and minds of the IDPs especially those liberated from captivity of the terrorists was dear to the NAF.
He commended Project Cure for the assistance saying, “It is apt and very appropriate that we get this support because it will go a long way in mitigating the increasing medical challenges in the IDP camps.
Assuring the Country Director of proper usage, Jekenu who is the Chief of Administration at NAF HQ, said, “Prior to the items arrival, we have mapped out plans on the movement. As you can see, a C130 aircraft is on ground, the items are to be airlifted to the North East immediately”.
